We talk a lot about affordable housing — but affordable to who? (Video)
A teacher? A police officer? A young family trying to buy their first home? A senior living on a fixed income?
Doug Conaway believes solving Sussex County’s housing challenges requires more than simply building more houses. It means asking whether the people who live and work here can actually afford to call these communities home.
And housing can’t be discussed without also talking about the impact of growth on our roads, schools, utilities, and other infrastructure.
For Doug, this issue is also personal. Through his company, Douglas Builders, he says he builds one home at cost each year for a young Sussex County family, helping make the dream of homeownership more attainable.
It’s an example of the same practical, community-focused approach Doug wants to bring to Dover.
Create real pathways to homeownership
Keep Sussex County attainable for working families
Support the people who serve our communities
Make sure housing and infrastructure planning go hand in hand
Housing is a real challenge. Slogans won’t solve it — thoughtful policy and real action will.
